not hosts.deny, sendmail wouldn't work, sounds more like the password file
got corrupted, or a pam data file, weird, it *should* in fact default to
the old password for a site admin, but if it let you enter a new user
without any password it's probably a bug....nasty at that

got any othwer usernames you can telnet in as ?
