My server is completely down, not even responding to web requests....
Control panel unaccessable, FTP -- Slow, Telnet -- Extremely slow.
I was trying to figure out if it was my fault or what. Heres what I did and
I know it was stupid... I setup over 85 domain names along with site admins
for each... Then I copied files from an old server into each sites web
directory.
When a site admin FTPed, he couldn't CHMOD because when I copied the files I
copied them as root. So I went back and used CHOWN on every file in
/home/sites -- which did mess up the directory structure and FTP. I couldn't
figure out what was wrong so I CHMOD some files and messed things up even
more. I finally got things back up and running after a couple hours of work
(things were working) and then all of a sudden the server started choking up
and failing again. The web access went down and FTP went really slow. So
now i'm doing a restore and will be doing the entire thing over (minus the
chown and chmod mistakes).
Could anyone give me a good reason why the server started to choke? Do you
think it was what I did?
