Re: [cobalt-users] oracle

Well, anyone of us seems to have his opinions about which
database system to use. Nothing wrong with it.

But for someone to make up his mind my advice is it, NOT
to chose oracle. I've seen a lot of oracle installations - up to a size
where it takes two days just to reorganíze the database and
maintained by a team of professionals.

When one does not have extreme experience with oracle,
the ways to make costly misconfigurations are immense.
It may be powerful, yes, but it's many bells and wistles and
special ways to do the job are traps not only newbies fall into.

If you are an oracle expert - fine. If you are not - keep off.

In the DB realm oracle is what windows is in the OS realm.

A proprietary product can never be as easy to use as an open
source one, especially if the proprietary procduct is the market
leader. When will we (the computer specialists and computer
users) ever learn this simple rule? A group of software engineers
which is paid by one company can never be as open-minded
and flexible as the user/developer population as a whole. Although
the chaos might seem to be larger in the open source development,
in the long run what comes out is living and usable for a longer period
of time and a broader community.
