Roger,

I am using an Archive 4/12 dat autoloader. I don't back up open files, but I
have worked with St. Bernard Open File Manager in the past. I think this
might be a Veritas product now, though. You can also get a Microsoft SQL
agent for Backup Exec that will allow you to back up the database without
shutting it down.
