does the php pkg you used have mysql support? it's very unlikely that it did
anything to your mysql configuration/users.

Anyway I managed to find a PHP 4.3.4  which installs nicely.
  Now I can't seem to get into phpmyadmin.

My userid  root and password  fred has now disappeared - I get an error.

I even tried the password   cobalt-mysql but no good.

Does the installation of the php4.3.4  change the userid and pass anywhere ?
