I saw someone's post mentioning that it sometimes takes a long time so I
let it run for 7 hours.

How long are you waiting before giving up? Disk checking can take a LONG
time... I've seen some of the older machines take an hour or more to come up
if they were powered off incorrectly. Lack of a journaled file system makes
it a length wait in those cases.
