If someone wanted to setup a "Search" to span multiple lists such a task
could be done with htdig, by setting the "start urls" in htDig's conf
you could easily generate a search engine in one location to cover as
many mailing lists as you wanted.

Of course obtaining permission to index each mailing lists archive would
probably be wise.
