drwxr-xr-x   root  root  /var

-rw-rw----   user mail  /var/spool/mail/*
-rw-r--r--    root  root  /etc/aliases

Use "ls -la /var/spool/mail/" and, if there are any files of the form
".user.pop" or "user.lock", then they may be causing your locking out
problem - remove them.
