Appears is the keyword - I can always send mail,
and sendmail is always running in the ps. The
error message from root seems to be an error
itself.

Again, as far as I can tell, there is no excessive
load on the server and sendmail is still running...
iow everything is fine except the reccuring error message.

Not positive - I've seen rejections from all
of them in the maillog. Other than that
I have no clue how to test them. BTW,
they are spamcop, spamhaus, and orbl.
