wouldn't it be enough to equip the recovery cd with a newer kernel that has
support for more networking chipsets built in?

I also use Netgear cards; I just picked up a few "refurbished" ones at the
local Fry's outlet for only $4.95 each.
But I've been unsuccessful in getting any spare cards for our laptops.
And I'm trying to learn how to (in general) replace drivers for RHL; I was
hoping you'd done some of the hard stuff <smile>.
