gerald, what patches did you include on those restore cd's you created? i
downloaded the "original" raq4r restore cd and wanted to modify the default
partition sizes before using it. unfortunately i have not yet found a
windows utility that lets me updates files in the iso. do you happen to have
a recommendation?

yes use a RaQ4/i OSRCD, boot the PC from the CD.
Connect to RaQ with crossover cable or through a hub/switch.
