hi,
just some words about your relay problem.
"relaying denied" DOESN'T check the sender's e-mail address. it checks if
the sender's ip-address/hostname is in the "Relay E-Mail for these domains"
list, and nothing else. that's all.
I created an account "test" for a vitual site "site.com". When I log in
to the RaQ as "test" I can send mail to other domains using
/var/lib/sendmail -v somebodyelse@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
that's right. the server itself (meaning, a person who is logged into it)
can _always_ send e-mail.
But, when I try to send mail through the server using Netscape I get the
"relaying denied" error. I'm connected to my ISP via
"pm2-02.lituus.net"
yep. and i think this address isn't in your list of domains being allowed
to relay. looks like a dynamic hostname / dynamic ip, so don't try to add
it to the list. that wouldn't work. next time you'd have another address.
In Netscape preferences I make these changes: [...]
they're all okay, i think.
So the email address I set in Netscape is 1) ignored or 2) not used as
the sender's address, or 3) rewitten to pm2-02.lituus.net.
1) is right (IMHO). the sender's address is ignored. if you are allowed to
relay, you just can send mail as "hotline@xxxxxxxxxxxxx" or something else,
if you want to. doesn't matter.
How can my
clients use Netscape (or any client) to send their outgoing mail through
the RaQ amil server??? I would have to add every possible IP address,
or domain, or network they could be sending mail from?
yes. it's easy if you have a static ip. or use the pop-before-relay package
- that does the trick for every other user. if you dunno where to find, how
to install and how to work with it, please read the archives. there are
loads of postings on it.
Doesn't that
defeat the purpose of not having a third party relay. What if the
client is connecting via AOL?
as the raq3 manual tells: "some users advise you to open relay to all com,
edu, net and other top-level domain addresses. this is BAD ADVICE". don't
open your mailserver to .aol.com. it's stupid. pop-before-relay works fine
and is the best solution for roaming users like you.
cya, jonas
