If I remember correctly.. You can delete the file and then run logrotate
-f.  That should force it.  I seem to recall that it prefers no status
file rather than a blank one, which is why I tossed in the delete part..
It will recreate it on its own.

As far as logging.. Restarting syslog may help there.
