Thanks for that. But I finally think I figured out what I did wrong with 
the install of 4.0.18. I followed through with Arthur's instructions 
which changed the root user to a different one.. in his example 
sqladmin. It is one of those DOH! moments.. seems to work fine using 
that as user but can't log in as root now.. which is probably a good 
thing I suppose.. I definitely do not know anything about mysql yet.
