Hi,
I had similar problems and I tried everything that is listed
on the MYSQL site bout it and no luck. In the end I installed
the package from pkgmaster and did it all that way. Got it on
changed the root password and never had a problem since.

Did you install the pkgmaster mysql over the version 4 mysql? I don't have any important databases yet. Took a quick look at the mysql.com docs and there's no uninstall in their search.
