bad, bad idea.

Try to find out *why* your root filesystem is running out of space. It
shouldn't.

login to the server as root and run the following commands

cd /
du -x | sort -nr | less

It'll give you a reverse sorted list (biggest to smallest) of the
directories and how big they are. It might take a while.

Here's an example of mine:
225192 .
206406 ./usr
61543 ./usr/lib
38009 ./usr/local
26045 ./usr/bin
22558 ./usr/local/frontpage
22557 ./usr/local/frontpage/version3.0
21949 ./usr/sbin
21833 ./usr/share
14270 ./usr/local/src
12806 ./usr/doc
11939 ./usr/lib/perl5
