Well
one last thing.... can you remember what modifications you made to
/etc/passwd?
Some
folks think that if you comment out a line in /etc/passwd, that will disable the
account.
Example:
If you
did something like
#root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
Then
in most cases, it is still possible to log in as "#root" or "#admin" or
"&*%*whatever"
