There is an excellent article on webmonkey regarding user authentication and tracking using PHP

The author answered a few questions had rather quickly, too.  Of course you must have PHP and
MySQL installed (actually, there is a method using flat files that is covered so it isn't
essential to have MySQL installed). MySQL/PHP installation on the RAQ(1 & 2) is very simple, it
was the very 1st thing I ever installed on a Linux machine. Don't own a RAQ3 (seems like there are
a TON of bugs), but I'm sure it's not very difficult to get installed either.

Of course, I am webgod as opposed to just be a webdoctor, such as yourself...
