Well, it works here on incoming mail on a live server (that's the
sendmail.cf I looked at). But I have found that it doesn't work for mail
sent leaving that box, nor for mail with multiple recipients that would
end up in the same pop-3 box. This suprised me a little as I was
expecting to see three copies of the message in there but I only got
one.

The $u does take it's value from the address passed in the RCPT TO SMTP
command. I use the extra header on a daily basis for my home mail
account. It all goes into one pop3 box & I use fetchmail to extract it.
Fetchmail can parse the extra header to recover the, otherwise lost,
recipient address.

As I said to Jeff, I'll look it up when I get a chance to sit down with
the book.
