1) Is telnet just not responding or do you have any error messages in your logs?

Telnet is responding as follows:
Cobalt Linux release 5.0 (Pacifica)
Kernel 2.2.12C3 on an i586

login: admin
Password:
Login incorrect

Once we're in on the serial port, I'll can check the logs.

2) Can you telnet in at all or connect via a serial port?

Telnet as before, Serial Port waiting on a cable.

If so what do you get if you type
        df
            and
        w

As soon as we're in on the serial port.

3) Is it possible that your box has been compromised and the daemon replaced with "hacked" versions? Do you have any unknown users in your passwd file or assigned to the group wheel or root?

Low probability considering that two other users have reported the same problem.
passwd file is a typical unix style with no unknown accounts

4) If you haven't yet you should install SSH and always use that to connect to the server instead of telnet.

Can't Install, If I can't get in.....Trust me when I can...It WILL be..Warranty or not!

5) Have you compared your /usr/bin/telnet with a know good one (binary diff, not file size)

As soon as we're in on the serial port, we'll check that out.

6) If all telnet access is dead do you have telnet disable in your /etc/inetd.conf?

Telnet works just won't validate.

Wish you luck.
Roger

Thanks Roger, it gave me several avenues to consider...Will post to list when I find the problem.  (Assuming that I don't have to reload).

Regards, Bill
