I have found that Outlook Express has an long delay before the message is 
offically marked read (I think it is something like 10 seconds).  I have
seem simular problems, but if I open the mail and let wait, it will be 
marked as unread and stay that way.

I normally do use Outlook Express, but there must be a option to change
that, nested some where 5 menus deep off some toolbar.
