Since there were no takers I'll have answered my own question, but there may
be a better way ...
I made a copy of /etc/smbpasswd (i.e. smbpasswd.bck), used the GUI to make
the quota change, then replaced the "corrupted" version of smbpasswd with
the backup copy.
