This is from a fairly busy RaQ3 here (it has about 60 sites and has been
up about 18 days):
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 128180 125476 2704 72824 28576 65304
-/+ buffers/cache: 31596 96584
Swap: 131536 8796 122740
There is nothing wrong here! Linux uses all available memory for disk
buffers. See the second line - the "-/+ buffers/cache" one? It shows
94MB free on a RaQ with 128MB. Since these boxes do a lot of reading
files from disk and shoving them out to the network, it is natural that
they should use a lot of RAM for buffers. If anything, a lot of RAM in
use for buffers means that your RaQ is working _more_ efficiently, since
a good bit of hits should be being served out of RAM, never even hitting
the disk.
This one has been a little into swap; probably when we were initially
moving sites onto it (we had to move a bunch when we bought another ISP,
and all the sites on this RaQ are from that move). We did a lot of tar,
ftp, untar of sites, and had several people hitting the admin interface
simultaneously, which loaded it down a little more than normal.
