Oreilly's 'Essential System Administration' has the most comprehensive
nuts-and-bolts explanation of chmod, chown, and unix permissions of
which I'm aware.

I've never used IRC (I went straight to muds ;), but I'd participate in
such a forum were someone to create it. I may even be able to  host it
if someone can recommend server software....
