You can only have one secure site per IP#. So if you do name-based hosting, you'd have to have something like <secure.yourdomain.com>, and allow your customers to each have a subdirectory at that secure site, i.e., <secure.yourdomain.com/yourcustomer/index.html>. The problem is that this appears to be inviolation of both Verisign and Thawte license policies.

We would have thought there was a secure way to access email, perhaps with a
web based email program? We are really open to suggestions here.

Web based email can certainly be set up on a secure server to make it secure. You can also use an email to fax gateway (I'm currently researching these for a client) so you just fax the client his order information; that's a bit more secure, as the phone line is point-to-point.
