Fixed.....
If you stop adding the un-needed ptr records this wont happen again. When you add them the zone file for the ptr records get set to slave in the conf file. This is what is causing the problems. The only ptr record you need is for the dns server host names.

Subject: [cobalt-users] mail troubles.. again
Remember last week my mail troubles.. the DNS not resolving properly??
Seems this problem has risen again.. no mail is being received from outside
the box.. all mail is being refused. Mail sent is not immediately bouncing,
but being queued to try again (thank goodness) Seems this appeared last
night sometime.. I added 2 domains via the interface.. nothing unusual. I
can no longer use the box for SMTP.
Last time it happened Charlie from Interliant found the problem:
>I just fixed her dns. There was an un-needed line in the named.conf.
Everything resloves now =)
I can't seem to find out if they are working on this.. it is definitely not
repaired.. I have enough knowledge and intelligence to repair myself if I
knew what I was looking for..
Anyone willing to take a peek at the file??? I can send it over.. thanks :)
