Two reason:

o The irc server is already running, so that was not work to be done.
o I'm on the irc almost all day and have found that I can solve quite
  a few problems quicker on IRC.  Instead of sending a responce that
  says "What error messages are you getting?" I can say cut and paste it.

Not to insult you, but it was an offer, not a requirement.  Just trying 
to be helpful :)
