The core files are created when ever a programs fails (in a way not
foresighted by the programmer). The core dump contains the content of
the memory allocated by the program at the time of crash.
It can be used by a programmer to track down the problem and remove
the bug from the program. If core dumps keeps showing in production
enviroments, it's probably either a serious hardware failure (a fan
that has stopped functioning, or a bad RAM-module).
You can disable core-dumps completely by using ulimit:
ulimit -c 0
(set it in /etc/profile or something similar to each shell used on the
system)
