Hello fellow listees:
I am new to this list and I would appreciate some help with domain name
aliases as they relate to the RaQ3:
First, I have a domain that has several aliases (i.e., xyz.com is the main
site with aliases xyz.net and xyz.org). The user-level interface does not
specifically address this issue. I think I have found three ways to "make
it work" through the UI. The first is to make DNS entries for each domain
name and have them point to an IP number. From there I created one "virtual
site" and pointed it to the same IP numbered used in all of the DNS
entries. The problem with this is it eats up an IP number, thus rendering
the whole idea of a "virtual server" useless.
The next solution I found was to make a CNAME record for each domain name.
However this is not feasible since the client wants to receive any possible
e-mail addressed to any one of the domain names.
The third solution I found was to create each "virtual site" and then have
them refer to the actual site directory via a meta-refresh tag inside an
index.html file. This is a pain since I will have more sites than are
necessary plus this is just lame.
Finally I decided to tweak the httpd.conf file. I went in and found the
site I just created and added the domain names to the ServerAlias line in
the conf file. Well, whatever I did it poo-poo'd the web server. I resorted
to a saved copy of the httpd.conf file and everything is happy again. My
question is, why did this not work? What generates the httpd.conf file?
What solutions, if any, has anyone found that can address this issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA!
Kind regards,
