Ive got a raq3 that was having minor e-mail problems (mainly with auto-responders and aliases). I noticed that the correct alias was not set up in the virtusertable file.... so I added it ( at the bottom where it says to add manual entries of course). After adding the line I ran the makemap hash command to rehash the virtusertable file. This took an extremely long time ( my connection ended up timing out). Fortunately I had a back up, because this completely hosed the original copy, and decided to do it again, but to background the process this time. Again this took a really long time to run ( and is still running). But in the mean time the sendmail daemon has decided to be a pain. The daemon will only run if you run it by the command line (/usr/sbin/sendmail -bd) even the /etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail start command doesn't work. And when it does run the daemon opens the port (25) but when you try and connect it just times out. Basically I am crying for help because I can see that this isn't going to be fun. Just to let you know I haven't touched any thing in the sendmail.cf file. I am just baffled as to why the daemon wont run properly. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. =)
