We all have had problems with the PERL as it is implemented on RaQ1 and
RaQ2. It seems the compil has not been optimized as it should have been.
The problem is now two years old: perl scripts run on RaQ1/RaQ2 almost
10 to 25 times slower than on a intel box. And not because the processor
is slower.
May we suggest Cobalt to post a patch to allow us to replace our perl engine?
Another important point, the backup. It is a major concern for most of
us. Legato and Arkeia are too expensive. The system, as it is, obliges
to download the full backup before beeing able to restore a single, when
it works (when the file is small enough).... a system based on ftpbackup
or mirror should not be *that* difficult for ingineers at Cobalt. The
backup has to be incremental, over a network (to be consistent with the
fact the server can be remotely managed) to a ftp account, BUT with the
capability to restore any file without having to download the whole
stuff. In case we need to restore the entire disk, the way would be in
two steps: first, reinstalling the whole system from the CD, then
restoring the backup with a script intelligent enough to restore the
proper files in the proper places.
Another good point for Cobalt; they would be able to sell more NasRaQ to
store the backups....
More important, this would restore the confidence people have in the
Cobalt products....
Maybe on the RaQ4 due next month? (Motorola G4 processor)... just kidding!
