They are kept in the same directory as where the log
originally resides.

Yes and No.  They are kept around for a month or longer
depending on your configuration.  If you would like
to see how long files are kept around look at

/etc/logrotate.conf

-and-

/etc/logrotate.d/*

The rotate line tells logrotate how many copies
to keep around.  Checkout the man page for logrotate
if you are wondering about the rest.  'man logrotate'
