SNMP : Simple Network Management Protocol is a protocol used to query
information from a device and can be used to set parameters on it. On
hosts, it can provide such information as uptime, CPU usage etc.
(depends on how it is configured). On routers and network stuff (where
it becomes useful) it will generally let you monitor usage and prot
status etc.
To put it in English .. if you don't know why you need it (or what it
is) you probably don't.
