Hi Chris,
we're talking about the absolute peak maximum of the machine before the lights go
out - these numbers can only be reached, when doing a live broadcast, where all
streams are generated out of one incoming real media signal (from a live encoder),
so no big harddisk action is required. Serving the same content to many users is not
so demanding. The server uses Raid-0+1 U2W-SCSII Arrays. The unit is connected via 2
x100 Mbit to a 622 Mbit Backbone, so the pipe-thing should be possible.
Under normal conditions you won't get 1500 streams for a long time as users connect
and disconnect again. For a normal event-broadcast you can easily multiply your
stream numbers with 3-5 and get the total of users over the whole time (depending on
the content).
These servers are doing nothing but live-streaming.
I just quotet this numbers to give a comparison to a K6-II with 300 Mhz/IDE-Drives,
as I thought Richard would want to know what numbers of his RaQ he could expect.
In a live broadcast on the RaQ3i the CPU should be bottleneck, maybe when accessing
a huge number of on-demand-streams the Harddisk is the bottleneck.
