It will fall back to the A record if an MX record doesn't exist.

It sounds like sendmail isn't running on that machine. I just tried to connect to it and it refused my connection. Try restarting sendmail (/etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail start) or rebooting the server.

Have you checked your MX records? I don't see one for your domain:
