Does anybody have an explanation why it works on Ferre's server but not on a

There's an apache option which allows apache to follow symbolic
links. It's called (reasonably enough): FollowSymLinks. There's also a
more restrictive option: SymLinksIfOwnerMatch.
By default, RaQs do NOT employ either of these options; using the first is
considered extremely insecure.
You do own a good apache reference, right?
I use Apache Server Bible, by Mohammed J. Kabir, published by IDG Books.
Where could I post my question in order to find a solution to my problem ?
Right here. You just did <smile>.
