ZDNET has always had a good reputation for information.
Lately you have been giving Cobalt Networks a very high rating for their
RAQ, RAQ2, and RAQ3 appliances as an easy to use standalone server.
However, if you run into a problem with these servers, support from Cobalt
Networks is virtually none. They rely on a mailing list for other users to
help each other out and figure out how to make things work. There is hardly
any manual information other than a basic setup available from them as well.
Their online support knowledge base to help with problems is very poor and
not enough. This is there support in a nutshell. Try calling them, and you
may get an answer of, "we don't support that, is there anything else I can
do for you"? - That's if you can get through. Most of time it's an answering
machine that never gets responded to in my experience. It has been a problem
to me, and other users of this company's appliance when tech support is
needed.
If the system is working and you don't need it to do anything else than out
of the box, then this is a fine Server. Try adding a software program to
enhance the server / user needs and see what support you get. NONE. Cobalt's
statement to most of this in their Knowledge Base is as follows - added
software voids warranty and is not supported. This is also true for any file
that is supposedly tested for the RAQ systems you download from their FTP
site other than required updates.
My business is hosted on a Cobalt RAQ2 and took almost 3 months to set it up
the way I needed due to the Lack of Tech support.
While the easy to use admin features are nice to the users, setting up other
software and file permissions (SSL - FrontPage - Databases - Majordomo) is
next to impossible without support. Had it not been for trial and effort of
other users of the mailing list, I would have looked at another server
immediately.
In all fairness, I think support of the server should be part of it's
rating. And you are defiantly over rating this product for the High Lack of
support.
I really think that someone should check this out if you think I'm joking.
