Re: [cobalt-developers] Sun is stopping Cobalt?

We are trying to create a web based GUI for admin with some of the things Cobalt had as well as some things it did'nt.

As for trade marks we did an exstensice check though our lawyers and could not find a trademark for the word RAQ listed at the trademark office. We also found severial instances of companies useing the term pefore Cobalt. If there is any problems we will rename it to be called Amoeba "Rak". i think we are on a lot less shaky legal ground than nameing a product "Qbalt" Also like the Qbalt OS we are going to release a version of our OS that will run on curent Cobalt hardware so if you dont want to buy a new box you wont have too. They said that Sun didnt want to deal with the class of user that used the cobalt and it didnt fit in their grand sceame of things any longer.

If you guys have any suggestions on what you would like to see in the OS or administration peices please let me know we are just trying to fill a need that dosent seem to be being filled by Sun. even my contacts at sun asked us if we wanted to take a crack at this over a year ago and told us this was going to happen about now.

By the way, We are a IForce partner. That is why you see the word Sun all over the place on our site. For those of you who dont know what that means. its a vendor that supports Sun products and suplies services and software to their customers. We are the only 3rd party vendor for Chilibean objects for Sun One ASP and have benn doing this for severial years. Chilisoft was owned by cobalt before Sun bought them. I talk to former cobalt employees quite a bit that still work at Sun.

As for you guys that say you can build a machine for $650 bucks thats fine but most users dont want to do that or worry if the hardware is crap. Our hardware has been tested for thermal issues and is hardware equivilent to what sun is offering as a replacement (lx60) except we dont yet have a dual cpu version (we are working on that) and dual port gigE boards cant be bought cheep enough to build a $650 system. We are going to be putting out a P4 Celron system for cheeper money but it will not have dual gige and still cost a grand. Also bear in mind the form factor of these boxes. 14 inch depth is not as easy as you think to find in a P4 system. there are a few companies out there that do sell something like what we have but you dont get the appliance os include d(you just get stock redhat installed or windows) with you purchuse and your probaly going to pay as much. also your not gona have to play "what order do i install packages" games with our os. Our GUI will be CGI based on its own server. it dosent use appache and you can use ssl for the conection.

Well i have to get back to work i have to help get this box done by release date. sorry for the ranting :)
