Should just be "root" and no password...

There were some OSRCDs I've seen that had a messed up /etc/passwd or 
/etc/shadow file which don't allow the root login (no way to guess what the 
password is)...

You could try looking in the file on the CD on a regular PC and see if it 
looks corrupt...
