I received this inquiry in my email today, and needed a forum to hand it
off to. I asked for info from the requester on whether the person truly
needs to be local, and if it's for a Qube specifically, or a generic
platform based on the recent BSD licensing of the Qube OS.
Please do NOT contact me about this -- I'm just forwarding it on, hoping to
help someone out who needs a job or something. Mr. Sill's info is at the
end of this message.

Sun/Cobalt Appliance Server: Can you recommend anyone for this contract
position in the San Jose/San Francisco area?

Bruce,
Found your resume on the Internet as I was searching for a person to fill
this 6 month contract in the Palo Alto area that is north of San Jose and
south of San Francisco. I see you have full time employment and out of
the local area for this position, so I didn't think you would be
interested in it, but maybe someone you know would be. Because of the
contract price my customer is looking for a mid-level programmer. I have
included the job description below.
Since you were in contact with many people that used and programmed the
Sun/Cobalt appliances, I thought maybe you had some business acquaintances
that might be looking for work currently, located in the Bay Area, and
would benefit from this work.
I hope to be of help to someone you know.
----------------------------------
JOB REQ Description
Contract rate: $30/hr on an independent contractor basis. (This is about
equivalent to being paid $25/hr if it was a W-2 employee status position.
If you need any additional explanation as to what an independent
contractor means, I would be glad to explain.)
Location: Palo Alto area
Contract length: 6 months
Description: Develop SW modules for installation and testing of the
modifications to the Sun/Cobalt appliance.
Please detail the skills below in your resume as to how you used them, if
you have used them:
1. Experience working with Sun Control Station Developer
2. Java applet programming, JSP.
3. Use of IPMI and ACPI management interfaces
4. Jakarta/Struts experience
5. Perl Scripting (both general purpose scripts and CGI scripts)
6. Write scripts to 'screen scrape' and interact with serial/telnet
sessions
7. Linux OS experience
8. Experience with Telnet protocol/terminal emulation (Telnet.pm perl
module use a bonus)

Bruce,
Thanks for your quick reply and thanks also for posting it on
some of your Cobalt lists and websites - I hope this will help
someone looking for some good work.
Although it doesn't have to be someone local, my customer always
has in-person interviews, so that usually limits it to someone
having a household and permanently located in the Bay Area. The
contract rate is very low, so they are looking for a mid-level
person, since a senior level person would need more.
The position is not related to the BSD licensing. I do not know
if it is for the Qube platform, but I will guess that it is
because, I am guessing, that they are expanding capabilities (or
doing something like it) in the Sun Control Station Developer.
Thanks,
Roger Sill
