Is there a /tmp/mysql.sock file?
If so, what are teh permissions on the file.  If it is a symlink, then make
sure it is linked to the active sock file.  I have seen times where there's
a symlink but it is not linked to the sock file that is actually in use.
The latter happens when config changes happen and the sock files do not get
cleaned up.
