because in his script that was a command written to "rm" not tar.. hmmm

rm: unrecognized option `--after-date' <<-- huh??
Try `rm --help' for more information.

This is on a man tar:
-N, --after-date DATE, --newer DATE
only store files newer than DATE
I do not know why it wouldn't work for you. Maybe look at the
way you call tar ... I found it needs to be placed near the end
of the command.
