I have something similar on one RaQ4 where the locate information appears
munged, almost as though lines are being concatenated in a bizarre fashion.
Interestingly, if I do the _same_ locate command from the admin account (as
opposed to root) it works fine.
So, have you tried the same locate command from a different shell account,
e.g. admin? Does that work OK?
I too have tried recreating the database and spent quite some time trying to
track this down, but to no avail. And in response to Geralds question, I
have run chrootkit (and do so regularly) and it appears fine.
