Well, I gave lilo a shot, and didn't see any change in behaviour. It
still booted the same kernel the same way it always did - ignoring the
root and initrd directives in the lilo.conf.

Oh, I did follow those instructions, and they got me this far. They do
work, to an extent, however they don't go the extra bit, and get /boot on
a separate partition, get initrd working or raid (which are the three bits
I'm having huge problems with).
