I forget the exact stage that alias is used, but it essentially
translates a local username (or nonexistent pseudo username) into
something else.
The virtuser file gets accessed during one of the rulesets, and
rewrites "user@xxxxxxxxxx" or "@domain.tld" catchall addresses
into another email address or a username.
Aliases are built into sendmail proper. Virtuser is a hack
implemented during address processing, via rulesets.
If anyone wants more info, I'll roll up my sleeves and give exact
details.
