While there are some reasons this isn't a good idea, it does NOT cause
excessive recursion problems in and of itself.  It might, if you've not
chosen to accept mail for domain.tld or have the website work at
domain.tld, but in and of itself, it doesn't matter.  All you need is an
MX record that points to an A record that points to the box.

RaQ users host tens of thousands of domains just the way you've shown,
without problems.

Absolutely NONE of the domains we've ever hosted have ever pointed MX to
www.domain.tld.

Why it solved your problem I don't know but I'd guess it has more to
what was in the "relay for" windows in Sendmail (which is controlled by
setting the RaQ to accept email for a given domain) than anything else.
