Hello everybody,
I'm writing a "Laurea" (Master) thesis about Internet Server Appliances
at the CS Department of Pisa, and I'm looking for some relevant
information that I was not able to find directly on the web.
In general, I'm looking for any kind of documentation which
could help me to understand how some commercial products manage
*** interoperability and portability issues ***, which are quite
relevant due to the lack of a common communication protocol among
the various kind of Internet Appliances of the various vendors.
More specifically, I'm writing to this list because after
reading the document "The Qube 3 Software Architecture Developers
Guide (version 1.0)", I have some difficulties to understand how to
use the CEE Libraries in certain situations.
As far as I've understood, such libraries allow one to use,
in external programs, the commands of CSCP protocol without needing
to know the details of CSCP itself. Furthermore, the CSCPs commands can
send data or invoke methods to the CEEd and the objects stored within CODB.
Now, my question is:
"Is it possible (and, if so, how?) to use these libraries to write
external applications that send commands to CCEd and CODBs class object in order to
carry out an AUTOMATIC transfer of data and objects from an appliance to
another (just like the Sun Cobalt Migration Utility)?"
Furthermore, do you know if there are other platforms, besides Cobalt,
that deal explicitly with these issues of portability?
I would be very grateful for any information you could provide.
Thank you very much in advance,
Federico Siri.
