If the server dies, Lynx will report something like "network
connection reset", then exit. I forget the exact message, but
you might consider using it as opposed to poring over logfiles.
You can also telnet to port 80 and manually enter an HTTP request
if you're so inclined. I usually use Lynx, but do many a manual
request.

One can direct that site's logs to a file accessible by user of
your choice. We give customers logfile access.
