Try this:
ps ax | grep postmaster
It should show something like:
934 ? SN 0:40 /usr/bin/postmaster
That is the PostgreSQL server. If it is already running - what's your
problem? If it is not running, try
/etc/rc.d/init.d/postgresql start
The error messages are very easy to understand, I really can't see your
problem here.
