thanks for the suggestion, but i'd thought of that.
unfortunately, /usr/src/linux (at least on the qube3 we have) only contains
the include directory tree (and i don't even know if that's complete). hence
"make dep" won't fly. the same is true of the other two 2.2.16 variants in
the /usr/src directory.
it would appear i need to either download the full, qube configured (and
patched?) source, or take my chances taking pristine kernel source and
building a new kernel. the qube3 being a somewhat unusual box, i fear i may
break something important doing the latter.
